Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (VSMT) is more commonly known as chiropractic care. It involves manual manipulation of a specific joint that has been determined to have a restriction in the normal range of motion.
The most commonly reported concern from owners is that their horse has a decline in performance or a change in behavior/way of going. More specific concerns commonly reported can include:
Riding Horses - difficulty picking up the correct lead, unwillingness to backup, cross-cantering/loping, unwillingness to bend the neck and back, holding the head or tail to one side, not able to track-up.
Driving Horses - unwilling to trot (break into a pace), pulling to one side, tail tucked tight to the body, unwilling to bend, difficulty traveling downhill.
Our initial assessment includes gait analysis, motion palpation, manual muscle manipulation/stretching and joint manipulation/mobilization. Laser therapy is commonly used in conjunction with VSMT therapy.
